Sunday, Funday

What a day it has been! I almost let it get away from me without posting something, but here I am.

Today started out with no organizing goal whatsoever. That’s always a concerning way to start a Sunday when you have no plans. I’ve found I can easily diddle away a Sunday if I don’t have a clear focus. Alright, I can easily diddle away any day, not just Sunday, without a focus. It didn’t help that our family’s favorite NFL team wasn’t playing today, so I didn’t have a deadline for when I needed to get things done before a game.

So was I successful at getting anything accomplished? Why yes!

I think most people have a junk drawer, but I tend to have a junk counter that sits above the junk drawer and it’s where the junk drawer goes to over flow. It’s terrible, and I really need to find a way to keep this area clear. School papers, mail, bills, coupons, kids’ artwork, it all ends up here. I spend a huge chunk of time clearing it off, swearing this is the final time I’ll let it get this bad and the pile grow so tall, only to see it creep back up to staggering heights. So I tackled it today.

The question remains, however, as to how I’m going to keep this pile to a minimum. Most would say to process everything each day and make sure it’s clear each night. Which sound great in theory, but slowly I have a lot of those evenings where things get crazy and I swear I’m just gonna put a few things there “just for tonight”. Someone else might suggest trying to fit it all in the drawer, hidden away until doing a purge at the end of the week, which sounds more my style. Others might say don’t let it in to begin with and try to go paperless, but who has the time?

What I have done is used a few binders and folders to collect the different categories of documents I find in this area. One for all kids related items that I need to keep for reference. One for mail, bills, and notices that I need to file away eventually. Another folder for kids artwork and school work that I’ll purge through periodically to only keep the special ones. I also have a tickler folder box that I use for things I need to do something about.

My plan is to at least put all incoming papers into their respective folders in the giant junk drawer daily, and then at the end of the week I’ll file to their permanent home, preferably the garbage can.

Therefore, this post is to declare that I am going to defeat that pile this week! Victory will be mine! Wish me luck.

What do you do to keep the paper piles to a minimum?
