Five of My Back To School Mom Fails
Yep, we are barely even into the school year and I’ve already found some mom fails that I want to document so I can remember them next year. This is going to be quick and painful.
1. Start shopping for school clothes at least a month before. Especially shoes. Every other kid seems to wear the same size as your kids. Get on it.
2. Do not assume your child has moved up one shoe size since the last shoes purchase. My daughter skipped two sizes, maybe even two and a half. I don’t even remember buying her any size 2 shoes every. I think she just used her flip flops and water shoes all summer and then jumped up a few extra sizes.
I learned the hard way when we were buying my son football cleats but my daughter wasn’t along and I saw some cute soccer cleats that were a good deal. What did I do? No, I did not wait until I had her with me later. Instead, I grabbed the size I thought she must be up to. Big fail. When we went back to exchange them and she tried them on, she was actually TWO SIZES bigger than the pair I had originally purchased. TWO. Yikes.
3. Get your shit organized way before the night before the first day of school. The week school started we had family in town and were extremely busy. Of course, we were unpackaging school supplies and taking tags off clothes minutes before open houses and first days. Ugh.
4. Don’t buy a ton of new school clothes and shoes. First, it’s still summer and they will just wear shorts and their usual summer gear. This year I actually did this (and I’m just adding it here as a reminder to do this again).
Before, I would buy a bunch of new clothes for my kids only to find them still wearing the shorts and shirts they wore all summer. Absolutely made no sense. This year, I made sure they each had a couple new full outfits, shoes, and then new underwear and socks. Boom, done. As the weather gets cooler and they decide what type of clothes they might want, we will go do another small shopping trip then.
5. Clean out those backpacks right at the end of the year. Yes, I admit, my kids’ backpacks from last year are still untouched in the corner of the mudroom. I’m a little scared to look. Don’t do this.
That’s it, that’s the post. A quick five things that I hope to read next year so future-hackermom gets the school year off to a less-frenzied start. How has your school year started off if you have kids in school?
