Reminder: Create a Restore Point

Quick Tip: If you’re on a Windows computer that is fairly up to date, you should try to create a restore point weekly.

Background You May Not Have Asked For:

A few years ago, my laptop completely blue screened. In other words, it crashed and I could not get it back and had to resort to a complete restart from scratch. I still don’t know what caused it, but I have a sneaking suspicion it was some Windows Updates that went rogue. Either way, when the recovery options came up, the only one that might have saved me from having to start completely over was having a Restore Point to restore my laptop state back to. Did I have one? No. No I did not. Luckily I was able to get to the Command Prompt and copy photos and videos and anything else on the file system that was important.

However, if there had been a recent restore point to restore back to, I may have recovered faster and easier. The moral of this story is to create a Restore Point. I now have a recurring task to do this weekly. Here is how to create one:

  1. Go to your Windows search or click the Windows key if you have one.

  2. In the search, type “Create a restore point” and click on the first result (that says “Create a restore point | Control Panel”)

  3. Click the Create button

  4. Give your Restore Point a name

    1. I usually do the date and then “Weekly Restore Point” (see example in screenshot)

  5. Click Create
