Struggling with Executive Function

Due to my plate overflowing, this post will be shorter than normal. I have one big concern on my mind and I’m not sure what to do so I’m reaching out to my readers for help.

A year or so ago, we had a parent-teacher conference with the teacher of one of my kids and we were told that our child struggled with “Executive Function”. I had noticed this before but never had a term to use for it. Executive function are skills that involve planning, focusing our attention, and remembering.

I had noticed that one of my kids struggled to remember things, always forgetting papers at school or to return things. I also noticed my child had issues focusing their attention when they needed to, such as being easily distracted in the morning by stuffies and toys rather than doing the tasks needed to get ready for school (more so than the usual kid distraction).

When my child’s teacher mentioned this to us, it really clicked for me. I spent the rest of the year attempting to create checklists for morning routines and going-out-the-door routines. I bit my tongue in the morning and tried my hardest to let my child work through everything they needed to do instead of directing and redirecting.

I found myself asking “And what do you need to do next?” a hundred times a morning. It was difficult but slowly became easier.

Yet here we are again. Struggling with my child’s executive function early into the school year. My child’s teacher has said, “We will figure this out together,“ which is very reassuring.

I would love to hear from any of my readers that may have experienced this. Any tips for this mama?
