Little Reminders Everywhere

Today’s post will be a simple story to serve as a reminder that even when you think you can’t, you can. You most certainly can.

A few months ago, I read the amazing book “Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo. I loved this book so much that I purchased the physical copy, which is something I rarely do and do only for those books that really speak to me. This book was one of them. I have since started going back and highlighting all my favorite lines (there are so many!) and enjoying reading and re-reading parts of it.

In the beginning of the book, Marie describes her mother and her mother’s love for a small Tropicana Orange radio. It was shaped like an orange and she used the radio all the time as she worked around the house.  One day when Marie returned home, she found her mother hard at work repairing the radio after it had broken. Asking her mother how she knew how to do all the things she could do, her mom replied “Everything is figureoutable!”

This phrase has really stuck with me the last few months. I have it saved as my phone background, I write it on top of my Miracle Morning notes each day, and I try to repeat it over and over when things are difficult.

One of those difficult things happened a few week ago when I participated in a 12K race that I signed up for earlier in the year. When I signed up for the race, I truly thought I would start getting back into running and training at least one month beforehand (after not running during the winter months since we don’t own a treadmill). Last year I ran two to three times a week from May through September and even ran in my first 5K race. I fell in love with running and I was excited to start this season off with a 12K to help me kick start my training.

Unfortunately, we had the coldest spring we’ve had on record and even had snow the week before the big race. I was only able to get in one run/walk the week before the race and knew I could be in trouble.

On the day of the race, I headed to the start area and jumped in line for a bathroom. I was feeling very nervous and wasn’t sure I could do it. No training, not much stretching, not much preparation. This was really not how I planned to do this race.

As I was waiting in line and people watching, a woman walked by with a very bright orange coat. It was a Tropicana Orange coat. I couldn’t believe it. I immediately remembered “Everything is figureoutable” and I took that as my sign. I took a deep breath and reminded myself that my goals were to run the first 5K and then see how I felt after that.  That’s it. Three miles and then I could walk if I needed to. The important thing was that I was there and I was doing it and I had not given up the week before when we had snow on the ground. I was doing it.

One and a half hours later, I not only finished the race, but I had ran all of it but a very long hill between miles five and six. Even better, I had beat my time when I had run the same race 20 years earlier – by more than 15 minutes! I felt amazing and I truly knew at that moment that “Everything is figureoutable!

Keep an eye out for those little reminders that are there to support you on your journey. You’ll never know what you will find.
