Prepare Now! Summer is (Finally) Coming

Summer will soon be here and I’m hoping I’m ready for it. Once Memorial Day gets here, I feel like August is basically right around the corner. Yikes!

One of my favorite books for hacking mom life is The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi. The Lazy Genius framework is to be a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t.

In one of her latest podcasts, Kendra lists 10 questions to answer before the start of summer to help you prepare. In this blog post, I walk through her questions. I highly recommend you go through them as well. They have helped me start to prepare so that summer doesn’t zoom by so quickly.

1. What are you most excited about?

I am most excited about a few things this summer. We have some camping plans already set and we also have tickets to see one of my favorite comedians that I didn’t think would ever come even near us. I am also super excited for the laid-back-ness of summer.

2. What are you already exhausted thinking about?

I may need to return to office this summer and that has me already exhausted just thinking about it. I have always wanted to work full time remote and after the pandemic, most of my office went to remote work full time. However, the decision was made to bring us back into the office a few times a week, and I am already exhausted thinking about moving my schedule around to accommodate.

3. What are the top 3 things on your summer bucket list?

  1. Camping
  2. Getting outside whenever possible
  3. Hitting up some local waterslides

4. What outfit make you feel good in the summer?

  • Anything with flip flops
  • Shorts and a comfy shirt
  • Tank tops that don’t show bra straps

5. What are your favorite summer smells and sounds?

  • Campfires
  • Water sounds smells (even chlorine water!)
  • Windows open when sleeping
  • BBQ foods

6. What summer events need to be made smaller?

  • Camping needs to be simplified to get ready
  • Going back to work – need to prepare

7. What house rule worked well last summer that you want to put in place this summer?

New rule: To use any screens this summer, the following must be complete:
Rooms must be reset “back to zero”
Play room must be reset “back to zero”
All toys and personal items from 1st floor must be back in their places
Screen limits (still deciding on these)
Must get outside for 1 hour each day

8. What was one thing you decided once last summer that will be helpful this summer?

We did not implement this last summer, but this summer I would like to decide that we will eat outside on the deck every chance we can. I usually whine (in my head – for the most part) about eating outside just because it takes a lot of work to take all the condiments, silverware, plates, etc outside and then back in. I love it when we do it so I need to be better about this one.

9. What household task will you be least motivated to do? How to make it smaller?

Any deeper house cleaning like toilets and showers
To make it smaller, I can try to only do 15 minutes on Mondays and then ignore it the rest of the days

10. At the end of the summer, what will you be so glad you did and what will you be so glad you didn’t?

Glad we went camping and got outside as much as we could
I will be glad I didn’t spend too much time indoors and stressing about the state of my house

What are some of your answers? What are you looking forward to this summer?
